A DREAM
When I am twenty years of age,
I will burst forth from this cage
And begin to see our splendid Earth
For the first time since my birth!
In my motorized bird I’ll soar so high
Above the world, up in the sky,
Over rivers and the seas,
With such stupefying ease.
With my brother wind and sister cloud, I’ll
Marvel at the Euphrates and the Nile.
The goddess Isis ruled the land that links
The Pyramids and the massive Sphinx.
I will glide above Niagara Falls,
And sunbathe where the Sahara calls;
If I want to escape the scorching heat,
I will fly up north to an Arctic retreat.
I will top the cloudy peaks of Tibetan fame
And survey the fabled land whence the Magi came.
From the Island of Kangaroos
I will take my time and cruise
To the ruins of Pompeii
At the edge of Naples Bay,
I’ll continue to the Holy Land, then seek
The home of Homer, the celebrated Greek.
More and more astonished will I grow
At the beauty of the Earth below.
In all my traveling I’ll be twinned
With my siblings, cloud and wind.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Abramek Koplowicz was born in Łódź, Poland on February 18, 1930. He had attended elementary school for only two years when he and his family were sent to the Łódź ghetto during World War II. It was during this time that young Abramek wrote A Dream as well as many other poems and plays. Abramek was forced to work in a shoe factory, but he entertained those around him with his imaginative stories. Abramek and his mother were both murdered in Auschwitz when Abramek was only 14 years old.
ABOUT THIS EDITION
A Dream is 44 pages and measures 6¼in x 10½in. It includes English translations by Małgorzata Koraszewska and Sarah Lawson of five poems by Abramek Koplowicz. Sarah Lawson also wrote the foreword especially for this edition. The stippled, black-and-white illustrations by Kelly M. Houle were letterpress printed from magnesium plates onto 100% cotton Crane Lettra paper. The text is printed in Cloister Old Style metal type crafted by Sky Shipley at Skyline Type Foundry, and the book was printed on an antique Chandler and Price platen press at Skyline. The books are bound in deep blue “Starry Night” Cave Paper with mica shard inclusions over archival boards with a foil-stamped, black, faux leather spine that wraps around the back cover. The book is enclosed within a merino wool book wrap that fastens with a vintage 1930‘s black button. The books are numbered 1-100 with #1-10 reserved for the press. There are also six artist’s proofs. The entire numbered edition is signed by the artist. $75

The book, as described above, with one print, a portrait of Abramek, custom matted in blue with a Nordic gold coin commemorating the 65th anniversary of the liquidation of the Łódź ghetto. The coin shows a drawing by Abramek Koplowicz, which he had sketched in his journal along with his many poems and plays. $95
